What is Tamio?

Tamio is a startup developing a new e-commerce platform similar to Shopify, but with a particular focus on the challenges web agencies encounter when creating stores for their clients.

During my nine week internship I was involved in the early stages of development and helped shape the user interface in the control panel, which is aimed at both agencies and their end customers. Through my internship, I have contributed to a user-centered approach in the design and development process.

Familiarizing with the product

When my internship started Tamio had a solid foundation, but there was room for improvement in the flow, design and the distinction between different user levels, such as agencies, clients, and internal users.

I collected the parts that could use some extra work - both in the webapp and the informative website, and reported these in GitHub, along with my design improvements for the rest of the team to see and consider.

Figma redesigns

Along with debugging and redesigning assets, I reimagined main pages in the webapp to further meet client expectations. My main focus was the dashboard, which was heavily focused on milestones and tasks within the Tamio webapp.

My changes included a slight shift in what was presented, adding a bigger focus on site sales, analytics and tickets from customers. This shifts the focus from the Tamio onboarding tasks to actual site statistics and order statuses, helping the business grow using their own metrics rather than Tamios' pre-set tasks. These tasks are still included in the dashboard redesign, just not the main focus anymore.

To the right you can see the old dashboard and my dashboard redesign.

Illustations

The former Tamio design included illustrations that did not perfectly match the areas where they were added. To fix this I illustrated new icons for these areas, matching the style of the pre-existing icons.

Using the style of the older icons I created new illustrations that matched the use case better, which helps future users understand the purpose of the Tamio features before they are activated.

Reflections

Working on Tamios UX and UI was a great way for me to step into the world of design outside of my university work. Getting my hands dirty and giving my all to make sure the Tamio webapp works the way it is supposed to.

I thoroughly enjoyed working closely with the team, meetings with checkups on how things are going, calls with the other designers, and chats with my supervisor to explain exactly why I'm doing the things I'm doing.

My time with Tamio was limited at nine weeks, but the work I did and the things I learned will be with me forever.

And to Tamio and its' team, thank you for the opportunity and the trust.

My preformance - according to my supervisor

At the end of my internship my supervisor wrote a report disclosing my time there and what the team thought of my work, this is what was said (translated to English):

"Greta completed her internship with great skill and dedication. She quickly familiarized herself with our system and was productive from day one."

"As we are a startup with a small and experienced team, Greta was assigned tasks that in many other contexts would be given to a more senior UX designer. Despite the high level of trust placed in her, she approached the tasks with great care and demonstrated both responsibility and initiative. It was clear that she had a lot to offer – both from her education and through her intuitive thinking. Even though our developers have extensive experience with tools similar to the one we are now building, Greta contributed important perspectives on user-friendliness, role management, and interface logic."
