What is Fjällräddarna?

I got tasked to make a prototype for the Swedish police authority Mountain Rescue in SwiftUI and link it with a physical prototype made with Arduino.

In the mountains, there are many activities that can pose dangers to individuals, leading to numerous accidents. In many cases, dangers arise in the form of physical injuries, avalanches, and rockfalls, which can have significant consequences. Therefore, it is absolutely necessary to improve the insufficient safety measures for the people who spend time in the mountains.

The prototype sets out to inform and teach users of the risks in the mountains, as well as simplifying the eventual calls to mountain rescue.

Bracelet Mockup

Integrating a physical prototype to go alongside a digital one was new for me. Making a bracelet that helps you call mountain rescue when you are in danger seemed like a good idea.

I wanted to incorporate both recent news or information regarding the general area you are in, as well as a way to reach an emergency contact if you happen to get lost or need to contact your group in any way. The main point of the bracelet was the help button, which requires both sides of the bracelet to be pressed in order to start a call. I chose to do this to minimize the risk of accidental calls that could take up time from people who need to get rescued quickly.

Prototyping in SwiftUI

Learning a new prototyping tool is always fun, and I found SwiftUI to be very useful for me in this project.

Guidelines

A big part of the assignment was applying appropriate guidelines to make the prototype actually viable. I followed both Apples guidelines for design and the course litterature to make sure every single part of the prototype was well thought out. Everything from tab bar items, how text was displayed and breadth and depth was considered carefully throughout the entire prototyping process.

Real and dummy data

Throughout the prototype you can find information on what to do or what to consider in a mountain environment. All of this data is real and collected from the Swedish Mountain Rescue website. Using real data in prototypes not only makes it look more legitimate, but it minimizes the risk of creating misunderstandings or problems in the prototype.

Even though real data is used, dummy data is also used in the prototype in places where implementing real data would be considerably more time consuming and/or impossible. The main parts of this are distance to the connected bracelet - since they are not actually linked to each other, and the map of where you are that is now hard-coded to be the institution where I study.

The Final Prototype

This is the final prototype for the assignment. Using SwiftUI's tools made prototyping things like the contact list and tab bar simple, and I am happy to have learned it.
